Review of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) by Simon W — 05 Sep 2009
There's barely a shot in this movie that doesn't puposely draw attention to itself - and it's pretty clear that old Clooney was having one hell of good time just showing off how clever he could be - but you know what ... It works.
It's a 'So crazy it just might be true' story and as funny and clever-clever as it is, it can't really be described as a satire. It's something else - and Clooney's OTT film style somehow makes it all work.
There are so many great moments in this movie. So many clever, cool bits. So many knowing references to itself that it should fall apart under its own weight, but instead it manages to sort of wink and laugh at it's pretty unlikely concept, while still drawing you into the possibility of it being for real.
