Review of Coneheads (1993) by Dave M — 30 May 2009
Films this unbelievably strange do not get made very often so when they do, you really need to seek them out. The story in this film is so bizarre it beggars belief that it was ever made, but it was, and for the most part that seems to be a good thing.
The film consists largely of one singular joke...they are aliens with cones for heads, and in various scenarios (more like sketches than scenes from a singular narrative) hilarity invariably ensues. The gag works well for the most part, but after a while it does wear thin, but by that point you are just about intrigued enough as to where the story is going that you are willing to forgive it slightly losing it's way.
The cast are all funny, there are a few good lines, and the effects are very good for the time, however, scratch beneath the surface, and there really isn't an awful lot of the film to remember and you would perhaps be forgiven for wanting just a little bit more from someone like Dan Ackroyd.
On the whole, it's god natured fun, and it's a fairly funny way to spend your time, but truthfully, it is far from being a classic.
