Review of Concussion (2015) by Kj P — 04 Jan 2016
"Concussion," in my opinion, helms one of the best performances in Will Smith's entire career. While the subject matter can be very subjective, as to whether you buy into it or not, it is a very effective film that you will undeniably be interested in, even if it moves at a snail pace.
That is the films biggest issue. At roughly two full hours, you would think that a dialogue driven drama would have kinetic dialogue, and it does sometimes, but other times I felt a little ripped off by the slow build up to scenes that had less importance than the previous scenes I was invest in.
Will Smith is easily the standout in this film and the storyline is definitely something worth exploring, but I felt as though they were trying to exploit this story more than explore it, and that bothered me a little.
Sure, this went on in real life, but instead of watching the doctors argue about it, I would have liked a few more scenes showing the hardships of the players. The audience receives a bit of that, but it felt rushed and brushed over too quickly for my taste.
"Concussion" is a fine fact-based drama that I expected more from. Would I recommend it? Not really, unless you are looking for a spectacular performance by Will Smith, which you will most certainly attain.
Overall, it's a forgettable film with some memorable moments.
