Review of Conan the Barbarian (2011) by Jim P — 13 Feb 2012
Remake of an all-time classic, Conan The Barbarian (2011) is a more violent, technologically developed and visually stunning delivery, fully benefiting from the advanced technologies of nowadays.Despite this advantage, with its weak plot, mediocre performances and uneven pace,it remains way below the level of the original Arnold Schwarzenegger's classic .
Of course, comparisons with the original are inevitable and even if both the movies do not have an Oscar-worthy story, this latest delivery lacks the pure and raw force of its predecessor. Everything in Marcus Nispel's movie is overplayed: the moments of violence are a bit too gore, the adventure seems to be geographically too big (one could lose himself in this fantasy world) jumping here and there and the performances are boringly one-dimensional. Conan The Barbarian also lacks the magic, which is supposed to have and in spite of the handsome performance of the barbaric Jason Momoa, the movie fails to completely connect with the audience.
Visually, it must be admitted that the excess of effects has had a positive effect on the movie and probably the only reason why the movie is bearable is namely the stunning visuals and the picturesque cinematography. The 3-D effects, however, adds no value to the production and paying tickets for seeing it 3-D is definitely not worthy.
Conan The Barbarian 2011 is not a movie which would be widely enjoyed by the mass audience. Even the fans of Conan might have problems chewing the fact that Arnold is missing. Still, it is bearable and mediocre delivery, which could help you lose some time on a boring evening, when there is nothing passable on the TV.
