Review of Computer Chess (2013) by Nick D — 28 Dec 2013
Any movie that shows the word a Sony Portapak gets points from me -- I had one for years, but never made a film of this quality. The low-tech B&W visuals are key to the construction of what feels like a found documentary, but of course, it couldn't be---I would have heard of it.
But the hoax never breaks into a sly grin, and what's left is a wonderful satirical look at an early chapter of geek culture: a weekend computer chess tournament, complete with insufferable master of ceremony, late-night philosphical bull sessions, rumors of DARPA betrayals, and an accidental encounter with an encounter group.
