Review of Compliance (2012) by V H — 16 Sep 2012
After seeing the trailer for Compliance, I was intrigued. While watching it, however, I was disgusted. I was especially annoyed by its claim that the events are 'based on a true story'. 'True' like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is true? Sure. While this isn't a horror movie (the genre that has overused the 'true story' tagline to the point of making it preposterous), how the heck could events so increasingly ridiculous be based on a true story?
I felt it was unbelievable; too ridiculous to ever be true. As the story went on, I became increasingly infuriated. The characters all behaved with such stupidity that I simply couldn't believe it. I also couldn't believe that it had a 90% rating on RT. What was I missing? How could critics I've agreed with so frequently consider this to be a good movie when it was so obviously not, when it was so clearly fabricated? The thing is, the thing that makes this movie even more disturbing, is that it really is based on a true story, and after doing the research, I realized just how much.
