Review of Compliance (2012) by Kyle A — 01 Oct 2012
I would have rated this movie 2 1/2 stars had I wrote this review straight out of the theater, but giving it a minute to breath before writing has helped my appreciation of the film. The people that think "Compliance" is a masterpiece are giving it too much credit.
On the flip side, those that hate it are missing the point of it. For most, "Compliance" hinges on whether or not the antagonist is believable in his role as a prank calling policeman. For me he is in the beginning but quickly goes over-the-top in his actions.
However, I'm not bothered by the fact that he's unconvincing to me, because I think that's the point of the film. "Compliance" has a pessimistic look at people and their response to 'authority'.
It's a reminder that we live in a police state of sorts. But should be be surprised? People re-elected Bush. I know people who voted for Obama because of the word 'change' and nothing more.
"Compliance" is a call to inform yourself, to think a little more freely and realize the the crap that can happen if we were to remain naive.
