Review of Compliance (2012) by Michael T — 25 Dec 2014
What makes the movie so disturbing is not simply the ridiculous and unbelievable circumstances. It's that the events had absolutely happened to a young woman named Louise Ogborn while working at a McDonald's in Kentucky.
The movie painfully depicts how psychologically malleable we all are if placed in just the right situation. We'd all like to think we're smarter...or would have a stronger will to resist what to outside observers would clearly be fundamentally wrong.
And yet, as was proven with the famous "Milgram Experiment," it illustrates how we are capable of doing terrible things at the behest of others. On some level or another, we are all "complying" to an external authority.
