Review of Commando (1985) by John M — 23 Mar 2010
An action cheese sandwich. This is one of "those" Schwarzenegger movies, and is actually one of the better ones (you'll know what I mean by "those" when I describe the plot). So Schwarzenegger plays this former commando who is trying to mind his own business in retirement, raising his daughter in a mountain house, when these guys he used to know kidnap his daughter, forcing him to go along with their plan to assassinate some foreign president, or they'll kill his daughter.
Arnie has to think of something to save the day. This is the Cheetos of action movies: dangerously cheesy. So many one-liners, it truly is an action-comedy hybrid. There IS no one else who could carry this BUT Schwarzenegger; if you plugged anyone else into the role of John Matrix (what a name), it would just fall apart at the seams.
The one-liners are great, the action is mindless, and sure, it's never a good movie, but that doesn't mean it's not a fun one.
