Review of Commando (1985) by Wayne K — 09 Jan 2016
Having been a Schwarzenegger fan since childhood, with Terminator 2 being among my favourite films of all time, it actually took me a long time to get round to watching this one. If you've seen his other 80's flicks such as Predator and The Terminator, this one might feel like a disappointment.
It's not an especially memorable film, but it is plenty of fun to watch. The explosions, the car chases, the one liners, the kidnapped children, the megalomaniacal villain and his blood-thirsty henchman.
This is among the cheesiest of the decades action films, but that's very much part of its charm. When we watch it now, and witness Arnie mowing down hundreds of soldiers to save a single person and everyone is totally OK with that, we realise that Commando is very much a movie of its time.
An era when the world couldn't get enough of muscles, guns and utter mayhem. It's far from Arnold's best, but it's an enjoyable romp nonetheless.
