Review of Coming to America (1988) by Lee B — 28 Aug 2009
When Eddie Murphy was king, - or prince as it may be in this film, it was certainly great, and the 80's were where he was at his best in this somewhat warmhearted comedy directed by John Landis. Eddie gets to show off his sensitive side as he was paired with a very young Arsenio Hall who seems to have good chemistry with him, in and out of different characters, - which are still pretty funny today.
John Amos, Samuel L Jackson and James Earl Jones make appeances in what was one of the epic films of 1988 where there is basically only three white people in all of Queens, - and that includes Louie Anderson, (sadly.
) Certainly not Oscarworthy but Coming to America for the most part is worthy of watching if you want some sentimental value of a time before Eddie Murphy resorted to Pluto Nash and transvestite prostitutes.
