Review of Coming to America (1988) by Sean L — 27 Jan 2012
After a 3-picture run that made Eddie Murphy unstoppable, this film shows the comedian's grip on his audience beginning to slip. Still, there are plenty of humorous moments and a terrific supporting cast.
Even Eddie pulls off some touching dramatic moments which suggest that maybe he should try his hand at more dramatic work instead of makeup-laden character impressions. John Landis does a solid job of making what could have been a total fluff piece into a well-designed film by approaching the material with a mixture of classic Hollywood and rambunctious underground mania.
