Review of Coming to America (1988) by Johnny T — 17 Mar 2011
Eddie Murphy gives his sweetest, most touching, and most genuinely likable performance to date. Look out for the brief before-he-was-famous Samuel L. Jackson scene. Very funny, with good multiple cast work from Murphy and Hall. Not only a great comedic effort but Eddie Murphy's best romantic film as well. Eddie Murphy does everything in this movie successfully. It's a sweet, oft-told story, and Murphy and Hall add a number of very sharp supporting roles-hidden by makeup-to add spice to the general level of gentleness. Coming To America remains his most personal work and a great argument that a movie can be decent and wholesome despite having enough profanity to make Bill Cosby lose sleep.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - Second highest rating in the system (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theater to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent...
