Review of Coming Home (1978) by Jerry R — 13 Aug 2008
Here is a great movie project. Watch Hal Ashbyâ??s two amazing films set in 1968. Start with Shampoo for the lighter, comic view starring Warren Beatty as the irresponsible hairdresser enjoying â??68â??s free loving, turning on and dropping out (while in the background Nixon becomes president).
Follow it with the film I saw last night, Coming Home, which depicts a completely different world even while being set in the same 1968 southern California as Shampoo. This world is one of soldiers back in America whose lives have been ripped apart along with their bodies and minds in Vietnam.
Jane Fonda plays a woman between a husband who has just left for Vietnam and lover returned from the war a paraplegic. Together the two films depict how disparate lives can be, even when lived simultaneously and only miles apart.
