Review of Coming Home (1978) by David J — 17 Oct 2008
An interesting but rambling story of wounded Vietnam vets trying to come to grips wit post war life. I saw this completely because Hal Ashby directed it and I had enjoyed some of his other films. the story arch in this film is actually pretty bad, none of the major characters act and react in normal or explained ways, but there is something in the moment by moment performances of the actors that is very believable: Fonda, Dern and Voight all did great with what they were given. The end especially is sort of just doesn't ring true....there are also some interesting musical cues and music editing going on.....wonder if Wes Anderson has ever watched Ashby movies with a pen and notepad...
Interesting but not really all that good.
