Review of Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope (2011) by Rama W — 07 Apr 2012
This documentary more preaches to the converted than illuminates what Comic Con is to the laymen. The stories of the subjects are what make this film so enjoyable with each person experiencing the same event in different ways. That being said the stories really have no context. Spurlock does not help us frame how large Comic Con is and what is happening throughout the convention. For example, when one of the subjects big moment happens in Hall H, Comic Con attendees understand how large this hall is and it is the place big media events happen but if you haven't been there you would have no idea where this guy is and how big this undertaking is.
But for anyone that has attended Comic Con, this is a reminder of why everyone goes back year after year. You end up rooting for our heroes who succeed at varying levels on their quests. The collector segment was the weakest with young man proposing and the artist's quest to work in comics being the best (for me). Overall, this is a harmless love letter to geeks and their big event . Excelsior!
