Review of Comic Book Villains (2002) by Blind P — 11 Apr 2005
..................is that they seem more of a chore to fill out than fun. So, with that in mind:
Gangs of New York. Looks good. Daniel Day-Lewis steals the show. However, I didn't find it that exciting.
May manges to create a passable psychological tension, albeit a campy one, and the film by Sisto's character made me laugh so hard I spit blood. More macabre comedy than horror, it was fun for one run.
Comic Book Villians takes the premise of "don't waste your life away on dreaming...live it!" to the furthest extreme, and the running joke to the viewer should be, "As if this would make people go that far. ha. ha." I admire the attempt, but it just didn't do it for me. Ka-Pow!
Big Fish reminded me of a movie I watched recently that I liked better, and that was the Barbarian Invasions. Father dying, estranged son comes back to reconcile, lots of improbabilities (in this film it was intentional). Here though the message is one of allowing space for your your dreams, and treating them with tender care. It questions the role of fantasizing and tall tales in our life, and makes a case for the way that allowing them to grow enriches us all.
The film is shot with the same tender care, and overall it was good.
The cynic intrudes, however, and gets a little tired of the manipulative tearjerking.
To close, I find it hilarious that there are more comments when all I put down was a series of trailing periods initially. Perhaps the audience is seeking brevity? heh heh.
