Review of Comic Book: The Movie (2004) by M R — 02 Feb 2004
The best part of Comic Book: The Movie was the extended interviews with Bruce Campbell and Kevin Smith. I'd say if you could only queue only one disc of the two disc set in your Netflix queue, just go for the bonus disc.
The movie wasn't awful. It just wasn't much of anything. The idea of filming a fictional movie at the very real San Diego ComiCon is a fun one. And living for years in the world of geek culture, they had an extra cast of thousands that were ready for attention. I mean, you dress up like a Dragonball character for a reason. And you're lying if it's not because some part of you REALLY wants attention.
And I readily admit that I'm so out of the comic geek culture at this point, that while part of me wants to go enjoy the San Diego fest, and have talked several times about it, I can't garner the energy I once had for dealing with that many people in one place, all pushing and shoving and ogling.
So, seeing Peter David or Bill Mumy talking about a fictional character didn't do much for me. Plus, the main character played by Mark Hamill, just seemed slightly crazy. Which may have been intentional. I couldn't tell.
Plus, I can't believe it was nearly 2 hours long. About two-thirds of the way through there was some clock looking going on. They probably could have trimmed it into a much more streamlined movie and been more successful at what they were attempting.
