Review of Come Undone (2000) by Georgios L — 30 Jul 2011
There's more to this film than the cover suggests. However, the minimal plot and lack of explanations asks too much from the viewer. Why the attempted suicide? Who is Pierre? This is a very slow film and what annoyed me a lot is emphasis on background noise: the sound of waves, crowds cheering etc.
Also quite bleak at times you really need to persevere with this film. The two unlikeable leads make this difficult. Things get better after Mathieu's breakdown where we meet a more human, down-to-earth and far less hedonistic side of him.
In one sense, the film is trying to show us how falling in love makes you focus on one person, blatantly ignoring his faults, and ignoring the other people in your life.
