Review of Come and Get It (1936) by Adam S — 05 Jan 2010
I just saw this on TCM, and it is a hard, somewhat awkward drama about a lumberman played by Edward Arnold, who trades his true love, played by Frances Farmer, for fortune but as the years pass and after his true love dies, finds himself attracted to her daughter, also played by Frances Farmer.
Walter Brennan plays his best friend and her husband and later father. Though he is stereotypically Swedish, he comes in at the right moments to calm, ease, and offer comedic relief. Walter Brennan was the first actor to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar distinction for his performance in 1936.
It is a little awkward seeing Arnold's older character go after Farmer's second character of Brennan's daughter, but above that, it is a great drama based on the Edna Ferber novel.
