Review of Colossal (2017) by Tatsuhito K — 18 Apr 2017
This might just be the one and only Kaiju movie that anyone can relate to on an emotional and personal level. I really liked Nacho Vigalondo's "Colossal", a genre-bending comedy that talks about addiction and depression by using giant monsters as metaphors.
It's such an original and thought-provoking tale and I found myself riveted throughout the film. There are several moments in it that made me burst out laughing, but there are also some quiet and serious moments that delve deep into the problems these characters are facing, and I thought Vigalondo did a wonderful job balancing the comedy with an engaging drama and also making it enormously entertaining at the same time.
Both Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis are terrific, and some of the visual effects look surprisingly spectacular (for a small-budget comedy). One of my favorite films of the year. It sticks with you.
