Review of Colossal (2017) by Hayden B — 20 Apr 2017

A creative twist on the monster genre. I liked how the story mirrored the flipping of the model when Gloria and Oscar are children in the park and the end where Gloria goes to Seoul, Korea and becomes the monster size monster in the park, capturing Oscar and flinging him to the horizon, far away. Thank God for small mercies.

The script is plagued with errors. First, the only action from Pretty Boy (played by Austin Stowell) is to have sex with Gloria. I found Gloria's pursuit of Pretty Boy to be stilted. Somehow, she had to enrage Oscar so he could become the nasty character he became. And the sole purpose of Pretty Boy is tantamount to a Rabbit being pulled from the hat. Bad writing. If the script had been stronger, the relationship only needed dependency established between Gloria and Oscar. This would have been stronger.

Having said that, the best performance was by Jason Sudeikis (Oscar). Some real tension there. Then, there was that completly stupid scene where Tim is visiting, Gloria, Oscar and Tim are all in Oscar's bar, the Western wing, and Oscar asks Tim and Gloria what the most outlandish, stupid thing, blah, blah, blah would be that could happen right now.

Well, Oscar retrieves a decade old monster firework cannon and sets it off in the bar. Little fires burning everywhere. Talk about Rabbits. Stooopid. They should have cut that scene completely. Lazy writing.

"Why, hell Gloria, I'm so mentally twisted, I'm gonna burn my bar down jes to make a reeeeaally stupid point.".

Poorly written and visioned scenes like this ruin a movie. And, Anne Hathaway, while convincing as the alcoholic girlfriend of Tim portrays a somewhat believable character. But, this role was beneath her pay grade.

Colossal is a colossal dud, in my opinion. Interesting, though. Nice revival of an old genre.
