Each of us has a little secret monster inside. Unexpectedly it may rear its head. In the new film Colossal, Anne Hathaway plays Gloria, a young woman living in New York with her boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens.) Gloria has been out of work for some time & instead of looking for work, she spends her time drinking with friends. Understandably this takes its toll on Tim & combined with her lying about her activities, he insists that she leave. With no money & no place else to go, Gloria moves back to her small hometown where she reconnects with her childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), a good-hearted bar owner. After a night of heavy drinking with Oscar & his buddies Garth (Tim Blake Nelson) & Joel (Austin Stowell), Gloria ends up passed out on a bench in the playground of a local park. While she is sleeping, an earth-shaking event is taking place on the other side of the world. A giant reptilian Kaiju is attacking the citizens of Seoul, South Korea. Later watching the footage on TV, Gloria recognizes her own mannerisms reflected in the monster's actions. She soon discovers that her presence, at a precise time in the playground, causes the monster to manifest. When she shares her discovery with Oscar & they enter the playground together, a giant robot appears with the monster in Seoul & the two are soon locked in combat. When you first see the trailer for Colossal, you think it is going to be a crazy love story & funny homage to the old-school Japanese monster movies, but writer & director Nacho Vigalondo has created an intensely serious & thought-provoking film about alcoholism & abuse. The performances from the cast were compelling. Jason Sudeikis, who is known for being very funny in comedies, is quite sinister in this role & sent chills down my spine. Prior to the screening of Colossal, there was a funny short film entitled "5 Films About Technology? concerning the mishaps of modern technology. Colossal is a MUST-SEE FILM.
