Review of Colossal (2017) by Frame R — 03 Apr 2018
The bigger the monster, the bigger the flop.
COLOSSAL.
Well, you fooled me. The trailer was promising and the posters were one of the greatest of the year, but the delivery is clearly spoiled. Where has this gone rotten? Maybe in the nonsensical plot points, the stiff acting of Mrs Hathaway, the miscast of Dan Stevens or the all over the place direction. Whatever it was, the end result is a film to watch in a public access channel in a Saturday afternoon. I can't even begin to explain how a poorly executed this film really is and how a beaten-down script was its downfall. After a captivating premise, the film is one rapid succession of nonsense right from the reason why she has that power to story behind the location. Its a soap opera disguised as a monster movie, a TV movie that tries to be a meaningful film. It ultimately serves as an example of what might have been as the writer/ director was unable to take the opportunity to make a balls to the wall parody or a metaphorical movie like A Monster Calls, instead going for an awkward in between. Don't go expecting much or don't go at all. If you do, it will be worse experience than being crushed by Godzilla or... a Pacific Rim robot.. or whatever this movie is...
