Review of Collateral Beauty (2016) by Lenard W — 30 Dec 2016
There is a way to make this movie. David Frankel couldn't. If you know what the real plot is, I still won't say anything more. Will Smith plays the life of the party, the guy who sold sell ice to eskimos through charm. Then, his daughter dies and his grief turns everything he worked for to sand in two years time. As you can see from the trailer, he writes letters to abstraction (love, time, death) who come to visit him and get answers for his letters.
Spoiler Alert: Time, Death, and Love do not heal Will Smith. They are there to help his partners learn to move on themselves. Death to get one ready for the afterlife because only people who are close to death can really see her. Love to teach the philanderer to win his daughter back who he lost due to Lust. Time to teach the third that a parent isn't the person who created a person biologically but the person who looked after another selflessly.
