This was too advanced for the critics and some others to understand.
It has happened many times to me that I went to see a movie given high ratings by critics just because it feeds the needs of the general public but I thought it was mediocre.
Collateral beauty was made for more understanding people who can see and understand a little deeper. It wasn't made to entertain the masses.
