I do not understand the backlash. As someone who studies psychology, this film handles the grief process and the infamous question "why are we here?" very well. The actors gave amazing performances, especially Helen Mirren and Will Smith.

Both of them convinced me that their roles were genuine. I felt as if Will Smith had truly lost his daughter. Also, I do not understand how a film with a speech like the one Will gives on the subway could receive such a low aggregated score on this site.
