Review of Collateral (2004) by Brandon V — 06 Jan 2011
Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx give significant performances in an otherwise non-significant thriller. The plotting is a mess and it's so terribly vague. We never get to see the inner-workings of the operations being played out by our hero and villain, Vincent.
Played by Cruise, he is supposed to be a badass contract killer. Great, work with that. Instead, besides a little shoot 'em up fun and clever dialogue in the beginning, Tom Cruise isn't interesting to watch, he's just very, very good.
"Collateral" would have worked so much better as a poppy action flick, but it isn't. It's heavy handed, overlong, and plagued with plot holes. I can only recommend it because it does get tense, the acting is great, and the premise alone is undeniably intriguing.
