Review of Collateral (2004) by Christopher S — 15 Sep 2011
Hugely underrated film. Tom Cruise was excellent as the hitman Vincent. There was no usual Cruise overacting and over the top dialogue. Cruise played a very cold and calculating hitman who only saw the completion of his mission and not anything else.
Jamie Foxx, one of the most underrated actors of his time, played Max the ordinary cab driver wonderfully. Foxx definitely deserved the Academy Award nomination for his turn as Max and if Foxx did not win for Ray as he did, he should have been given the Academy Award for playing Max as a consolation prize.
The banter and chemistry between Foxx and Cruise was very good but what really topped the film here was Los Angeles itself. Collateral was one of the best films based in and about LA released in the last 20 years.
Michael Mann did an excellent job of showcasing LA as Max tries to escape from Vincent while Vincent knocks off each of his targets. Wonderful film, highly recommended.
