Review of Collateral (2004) by Bryantsmith — 14 Aug 2019
Michael Mann's Collateral is a film made by a master filmmaker. For years now, I have felt Michael Mann doesn't get the respect usually bestowed on his contemporaries. In Collateral a hitman (Tom Cruise) is assigned to take out a few targets.
He takes a cab upon reaching Los Angeles and a rapport builds up between him and the driver (Jamie Foxx). Of course, he must ensue that the job is done and the entire film (which takes place over a night) we see the dual scenario of a killer doing what he does best, and then roaming around talking to his friend.
Tom Cruise is in top notch here and the actor effortlessly glides into the role of a villain. Jamie Foxx is good and likeable enough you root for him. The film, as is the case with every Mann film is stylish and looks great.
There is a serene sense of atmosphere and Mann is skilled enough to make the digital camera do wonderful things in the city of angels.(Stylish, atmospheric thriller).
