Review of Colette (2018) by Miriam Y — 29 Sep 2018
COLETTE IS A GOOD MOVIE ABOUT A FASCINATING WOMEN, SUPERBLY PORTRAYED BY kEIRA kNIGHTLEY. tHE MOVIE EXPERTLY GOES THROUGH A DECADE AND A HALF OF THE BLOOMING AUTHOR'S LIFE and you feel the struggle of a young woman in a PATRIARCHAL society being robbed of her right to claim her work.
It was also fascinating to watch Colette explore her sexuality. She really was a woman ahead of her time and the movie was able to communicate that very well. However, where the movie did not work so well was in its pacing.
the first quarter of the movie was quite slow and at times the chronology felt a little jarring. However, the storytelling is very good, and the scenery is lush and beautiful. However, it really is the acting that is outstanding in the movie.
Keira Knightley is fantastic in this, as is Dominic West. Both of them deserve Oscar nominations, because it is their interactions, especially the fights, that give the movie its greatest moments.
