Review of Colette (2018) by Jonathan B — 23 Sep 2018
I wish I knew this was real story. it was the first time that I think knowing that it was true would have helped my enjoyment of the movie. Especially in the last 30 minutes when I didnt really know where the movie was heading. I didnt know what the problem was we were going to solve. what the conclusion as meant to be.
The directing and writing was a bit heavy handed throughout. Some very wordy and direct dialogue in the first half. and the monologue by Missy, the trans woman was really heavy handed. I wish it was less polished and not as though it was a story she shares over and over again.
The movie kind of bounced around. was it about the stories? was it about her exploring her sexuality? The movie was really about Colette growing into herself and gaining confidence to be an independent person and thinker. And that story was very much there but for most of the movie it didnt feel like that was the main driving story.
I really enjoyed the movie though. What a great story.
