Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Brandon H — 10 Sep 2010
A classic example of a movie that doesn't realize the potential of its premise, it still has some good moments: "Are you saying that my soul is a chickpea?".
What sort of things are missing? Take the Russian poet soul, for instance. There's a clear difference between Paul with and Paul without his own soul, but what happens when he replaces his nothing with the Russian poet? Well, frankly, it appears as though he's very similar to his original self-- only this time he wears a Russian hat, goes to Russia, and has a couple extra visions. Where's the real meat and potatoes of this idea of swapping souls? Where are the real differences, beyond the whimsical ones?
The movie was a little awkwardly paced, lacked focus, and spread its ideas a little too thin. I think it could have been even funnier than it was with a little better timing and better balance, more focus on the notion of what really happens to these "lost souls.".
Still, the amusing moments and the decent writing were enough to hold my interest. For that, along with its pure innovation, it earns itself a 6/10 in my book.
