Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Jer M — 11 Oct 2009
Cold Souls is funny while being sad, beautiful while being weird, and absurd while being completely normal. It's like a Sartre play starring Paul Giammatti. Essentially, this is an absurdist farce that is treated with the grave seriousness of a Russian tragedy.
Therefore, the humor level is cranked up to a maximum. It will most definitely remind you of the work of Charlie Kaufman, but Sophie Barthes is able to craft her own vision in the end. It is not perfect and there are moments where Barthes' ideas do not match her grasp, but this is a stronger feature debut than most and I have a feeling that Barthes can only get stronger and weirder and funnier from here.
