Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Jimmy M — 05 Dec 2009
If Cold Souls does at least one thing, then this is it. It establishes once again that Paul Giamatti is one of the finest actors of this or any generation. Thankfully this understated and intelligent film does far more.
It examines in a unique and inventive way the very reasons we exist. Giamatti plays himself...bravely. He is struggling with his role in Uncle Vanya and decides to have his soul extracted and stored. This strange premise works, as we follow the lead's tormented path to his search for answers.
Thoughtful and at times funny, Cold Souls is a perfect antidote to mainstream cinema.
