Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Wretch A — 07 Feb 2010
Cold Souls is a film with a fantastic premise. It makes the first half of the movie fantastic in its own way. It's very funny and certain scenes explore implicit puns you hear in everyday life. Despite everything coming together in the beginning, towards the halfway mark and onwards, it loses a lot of steam.
It explores the premise to a point where it is no longer very believable, which leads to this aimless need for some sort of average plot in what should be a not so average movie. The writer/director obviously channel Charlie Kaufman here, and he surely knows how to use surrealism and absurdities not only for great humor but also for deep existential uneasiness in place of an everyday plot device.
Cold Souls only hints and winks at these grand ideas, and when it gets serious, it does so in a cowardly kind of way. I think this movie could have learned a little more from its inspiration.
