Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Nick D — 13 Mar 2010
This is a premise movie, meaning: ya gotta buy the premise or the whole thing is silly; which, by the way, it is. Also darkly funny, well performed, esp the always great Paul Giamatti, playing a eponymous actor who extracts his soul at a sci-fi looking operation on Roosevelt Island run by a kindly, not-quite-sinister "doctor" (David Strathairn).
The plot involves Russian mobsters and soul-mules and talentless bimbo actresses and a lot of atmosphere. The bit around Uncle Vanya, reminding me a bit of Richard Dreyfus' Richard III in Goodbye Girl, was a nice touch, being that the Russians run riot over this movie.
"Humorless"--that's how Strathairn's character describes it and them.
