Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Tim W — 27 Nov 2010
More clever-funny than laugh-out-loud funny (though it has its moments there too). I wish they had jettisoned most of the Russian-donor stuff, or maybe changed it a bit so that it didn't seem... not dull, just a little dour for such a movie that has a wacky sci-fi concept that's out of Charlie Kaufman (both getting "rid" of an essential part of ourselves and the facet of fucking with an illustrious actor's personality).
But it doesn't have a Jonze or Gondry leading it into amazing visual territory, so it's just its script, which is good but not great. If it had a really amazing director it might've had something.
But its sense of humor and Giamatti's performance make it something of a minor must-see.
