Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Howie V — 09 Jan 2011
My first time seeing Paul Giamatti in a leading role. Great first impression as he was playing himself. This one is just as good as any of the Jim Carrey or Steve Martin stuff let's just hope Giamatti can sustain it. I've seen him in small rolls in The Negotiator and The Illusionist - two great movies - and he stole just about every scene he was in. Not only does he have presence but those the two roles are polar opposites. I thought this guy has some range.
Cold Souls has a great hook: "I think therefore I am." The line he chooses just snowballs from one absurd metaphysical event to another...and then he has to explain it all to his girlfriend [Emily Watson who made a career out of re-acting]. The wierd thing is that you're with him every step of the way thinking; "What would I do?" Two thumbs up!
"You're telling me that my soul is a chick pea?" - Paul.
