Review of Cold Mountain (2003) by Ernst M — 28 Dec 2011
I tried to leave out that from the beginning of the film I knew exactly what was going to happen but it still bothered me some that it played out exactly as I thought it would. I think the only that prevents me from liking this much as I think Dave did is that I just didn't like Nicole Kidman in the role. For me I could not get past seeing her as an actor trying to play the role instead of her being the character. This is odd because usually I don't mind Kidman in her roles but this one just didn't sell me. Zellweger? Her character I kind felt the same as Kidman's character but her character was at least entertaining. Which again is strange cause I just don't get Zellweger in a dramatic movie. I guess because she was doing at parts the comedic relief (which is her stronger area) which translated into me enjoying her dramatic moments. Jude Law, I'm a big fan of and doesn't dissapoint again.
What I think I enjoyed the most was the supporting cast. Sutherland, Hoffman, Gleeson (especially), Ribisi, Murphy, and of course my gal Portman. This kind flys in the face of my critique of 'Flags of Our Fathers' but the throughout the whole movie there quality actors do a quality job with the bit part assigned to them.
As a whole I enjoyed the film and some of the interpersonal relationships developed or rather displayed.
