Review of Cold Mountain (2003) by Jonathan B — 03 Jan 2012
A vast American romance set against the backdrop of the Civil War, Cold Mountain feels like a proper epic. Jude Law and Nicole Kidman portray the lovers separated by conflict and tragedy. It is a well told if fairly predictable tale populated by familiar nought characters.
....the lecherous preacher, the Southern belle, the sadistic lawman. Central and peripheral roles are well acted and there's some nice bit parts for the likes of Eileen Atkins and Natalie Portman. Renà (C)e Zellweger gives an Oscar winning as Ruby and there are some terrifically paced and gory battle scenes that bring to life some of the atrocities of this period.
Maybe a bit on the long side but due to the nature of the narrative it never seems to drag and manages to hold the viewers attention.
