Review of Cold Creek Manor (2003) by Craig E — 26 Jun 2009
Boring and uninspired, it fails as a suspense film and whatever drama it contains is ham-handed and trite. The performances are so over-the-top as to border on being caricature and the supposed-to-be shocking moments make no sense at all. There are no real surprises as everything is cliched and the turning points are advertised so far in advance that it would take quite a feat not to see what's coming from a mile off.
A single shot of the stained glass window near the beginning told me right away how it was to be used later on. The introduction of the sheriff and the whole nature of her character left me with no doubt as to what was to happen to her. Juliette Lewis' character is so pointless that one even wonders why she was there to begin with.
This is one of those films that tries to be a smart suspense thriller but fails at every turn. With no real sense of dread and so many pointless threads that are supposed to add mystery but offer no breadcrumbs along the way to make you care, Cold Creek Manor is simply a pointless exercise.
