Review of Coffy (1973) by Erik O — 10 Jul 2008
I'm officially in love with Pam Grier. Four stars might seem like a bit too generous to some, but please understand that I'm grading this film as a piece of Blaxploitation Cinema; I'm factoring in my love for Blaxploitation, Sid Haig, and Pam Grier, as well as this film's ability to take all three of those elements and blend them into a shameless buffet of awesomeness.
Yes, 'Foxy Brown' was much better than this flick was; but this film just pulls-out all the stops, and turns out to be a pretty fun experience. From the random gratuitous catfights (where all of the participants suddenly end up topless), to Pam Grier going on a shot-gun massacre, to one of my all-time favorite actors, Mr.
Sid Haig, having way too much fun as the sleazy henchman Omar. This film rocks. But I want to stress that you should only watch this film if you're a fan of Blaxploitation, Pam Grier, Sid Haig, or all of the above.
People who can't appreciate any one of those three wonderful things, will probably not be able to appreciate this film, either.
