Review of Coffy (1973) by Kyo 9 — 19 Oct 2008
When the British Film Institute once held a poll that asked renowned directors to vote for their top ten films of all time, most of them went for the obvious choices like "Citizen Kane" and "8 1/2"; Quentin Tarantino voted for "Coffy"! Obviously, that's a bit of a stretch (though you can see Tarantino's pure love of the film in every frame of "Jackie Brown"), but if you only watch one "blaxploitation" film in your life, you should choose this one, which is over-the-top and greatly entertaining, not to mention politically incorrect and damn proud of it! Pam Grier is pure iconic hotness in this movie (and hardly looks like she's aged at all during the last thirty-five years), though, per usual, her frequent co-star, Sid Haig, completely steals the movie as a sleazy henchman.
From King George, the pimp with his own theme song, to Pam's climactic emasculation of the villain with a sawed-off shotgun, there are too many classic moments to list here.
