Review of Coffy (1973) by Kenneth L — 15 Nov 2010
This isn't actually a good movie, but it is entertaining and exemplary of its genre (70s blaxploitation). Pam Grier is pretty good as Coffy, a badass chick you don't want to mess with. Unlike some blaxploitation heroes, however, Coffy isn't a professional badass - she's just a nurse who is driven to violent revenge after some pushers get her little sister hooked on smack.
Robert DoQui has some good scenes as George, a pimp so badass he gets his own theme song ("George...George...He's a pusher..."). Most of the other supporting performances range from cheesy to wooden.
The plot's pretty simple, really, though a couple of threads are left unresolved. The movie is darker and more violent than you might expect given the kitschy reputation of '70s blaxploitation movies.
There are, however, lots and lots of boobs on display. The movie is awkwardly put together at times, but in ways that are unintentionally funny. It's worth seeing if you're interested in the history of this sort of thing.
