Review of Coffy (1973) by A K — 25 Oct 2006
Pam Grier is so sexy in this movie, it HURTS. But beyond that, I always felt that COFFY really captured Blaxploitation better than any other film. It's down and dirty, really unpleasant in places, and unapologetic.
The angry race politics are in your face, but it's sleazy, grindhouse action cinema, too. This is exactly what Blaxploitation was at its best: lowbrow film with enlightened messages, and again, Pam completely redefined how I and many others thought of Black women.
She's smoking hot in this movie, and if you ever had any racism when it comes to Black females, it's gone by the end of this.
