Review of Coffy (1973) by Chris W — 31 Jul 2010
A true blaxploitation gem, COFFY effectively establishes the strong female lead archetype within the genre, thanks largely to pam grier's fearless performance. jack hill sets a formula that countless others - himself included - would follow over the next few years, to varying degrees of success.
but none of those movies taste quite so sweet as COFFY, a film that holds up over a number of viewings and nearly 40 years. sid haig - one of hill's regular collaborators by this time - comes dangerously close to stealing the show as the swarthy, memorable heavy, omar.
no survey of back exploitation cinema is complete without the inclusion of this important cornerstone.
