Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (2004) by Patrick P — 16 Jul 2008
This series of thematically linked vignettes put together piecemeal by filmmaker Jim Jarmusch is, to me, simply a way to market and put these shorts out.
Many of them stand on their own quite nicely (Iggy Pop and Tom Waits, Steve Buscemi and the Lee twins, Bill Murray and Wu-Tang, Steven Wright and Roberto Benigni), but others go on seemingly forever (Cate Blanchard, Jack and Meg White). It's a very inconsistent and choppy film due to the nature of its construction.
At first I hated it, but upon watching these vignettes separately, I realize that I haven't lost any respect for Jarmusch, and that, well, filmmakers are only human.
Haha!
