Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (2004) by Mark H — 31 Aug 2008
Like all feature length films that are a series of short films ("New York Stories" comes to mind) some of the films are hits and some are misses. I particularly liked the "Twins" (possibly because I am the father of twins with this exact set of personalities! Yes, you should feel sorry for me :-) segment and the segment with Bill Murray. Bill Murray has travelled a long way as an actor. This is in my opinion, almost equal to his performance in "Lost in Translation" (though with less intensity...).
The segment with Steven Wright and Roberto Benigni which is entitled "Strange to Meet You" really is strange, but in a good way. If you like Steven Wright, you will like this.
Perhaps the underrated performances are of Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina (himself an underrated character actor. His performance in Chocolat is perhaps his best).
If you like alternative cinema, this is well worth a look.
