Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (2004) by Manny C — 19 Mar 2011
The maverick spirit of Jim Jarmusch informs everything about Coffee and Cigarettes, his lyrical, humorous collection of eleven stories centered around a few people dealing with addictions to said substances, stories he started filming way back in 1986.
Jarmusch makes this one play like a rich rock and roll concept album, one where not all of the tracks are great, but many are fantastic. Bill Murray shines as a guy serving coffee to RZA and GZA, Cate Blanchett does some of her best work playing herself, as well as her volatile cousin.
Tom Waits and Iggy Pop have a cool, memorable encounter. The best is a simple chat between Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina, getting in some sly digs at Hollywood. Jarmusch is still a movie-making visionary force to be reckoned with.
